Archive for the ‘Close Reading’ Category
The SQA have started publishing past papers on their website.
The papers for 2007 are available here: http://www.sqa.org.uk/pastpapers/findpastpaper.htm?message=blank
Set yourself an hour for this one… I’ll put up marking instructions on Thursday…
What can you do to revise?
Close Reading first – the best thing to do is to make sure that you are sure how to tackle each type of question and practise answering question papers.
There is very good advice from the SQA website on the Close Reading Page – Link to the Right.
There are a number of passages and marking schemes to be found in the Close Reading Category – again on the right.
As promised a link to a fresh passage: the Marking Scheme wil be posted later in the week. Thanks to Munir for pointing out the faulty passage. My good copy is in work – i’ve scanned in the passages, retyped and edited them as rugby rerun
Critical Essay. Just reading your notes endlessly is not enough. Do something with them.
I recommend turning them into a Point Quote Analysis table. This makes you focus on Quotation as the central point of a paragraph and helps you connect the points and analysis to it. Further to this you can reduce your notes to the key quotes on their own. The best thing to do is to practise writing an essay in 45 minutes. I’ll put a selection of questions us later in the week – there is material, though, in the critical essay section to look over.
Please leave a comment so that I know who’s visiting. Even better – leave a question.
Happy revising… MrG
I found this link to a Close Reading Skills package for Higher and Intermediate 2 that you might find useful… http://www.staloysius.org/Myrtle/English/s5/mod3/CloseReading2a.pdf
The final mark scheme is posted here. I have been overwhelmed by the success of this ‘experiment’ – over 2000 page views this holiday! I hope that you’ve found the materials and links here useful (please let me know by posting a comment or reply) and that you had a very productive Easter break.
See you all in school next week…
Some new Cloze Poem revision exercises also added below on Rapunzstiltskin and Revelation. The marking scheme for last week is here 2002 Higher marking .
Here is another (shorter) two passage paper. I’d sit in it less time – try for an hour and 15 minutes. I’ll post the Marking scheme on Thursday.
The second marking scheme is below – the last question is ‘A mark on merit’ and a 10 marker which, fortunately no longer exists. Clearly comparison is needed with a substantiated point about each of the five identified areas:
main ideas; point of view; tone; imagery; structure
And another one to keep you going – enjoy! Again, I’d recommend sitting it under timed conditions to help get you into peak condition for the real thing.
Remember, it’s also good to get into the habit of reading good quality journalism to boost your reading speed and quality. I’m putting links to some quality newspaper websites to the sidebar.
